Situated north of Bucharest, between Ploiești and Vălenii de Munte, the Zamfira Monastery was founded in 1743 by Zamfira Apostle, the wife of a boyar at the court of Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu. A second, larger church was built in 1855 and decorated by the celebrated painter Nicolae Grigorescu. Nicolae Iorga (1871-1940), the great Romanian historian and politician, and member of many Romanian and foreign academies and scientific societies, is buried in the churchyard.
